            Interview with fanfic bard Ogami

This fine bard is responsible for some memorable classics of the alt

fanfic genre. (Of a decidedly satiric slant.) Most notably the

well-loved gem "Subtext." Ogami's stories are reviewed in the fanfic

            section below.

XINE:What was your impetus to begin writing the fanfic, was it

            primarily

the series itself or because of what you were reading online? And

            what

specifically caused your interest to wane?

OGAMI:With the second season as a backdrop, I became interested in

            the

subtext genre of stories I found online. They either filled out

            existing

episodes, or delved where no episode would go. (grin) I don't

believe

I've ever read a "general" or Uber story, it was subtext all the way

            for

            me! (chuckle)

XINE:What is your favorite XWP season overall and your favorite

            single

            episode and why?

OGAMI:Since I started watching in the 2nd, I have to consider it the

ideal season. My favorite episode would have to be a tie between "A

            Day

in the Life" and "The Price". Both episodes captured what is

            interesting

about the show, and the dynamic between the two characters.

XINE:And what are your least favorites and why as well?

OGAMI:Episodes from the 5th season like that threw Xena at any

            passing

male, episodes from the 5th season that rewrote Gabrielle into a

cardboard cutout, and episodes from the 5th season that rewrote the

Amazons into silly cheerleaders. (I guess you could say that's my

            least-favorite season.)

XINE:Who/what are your favorite bards/fanfic stories?

OGAMI:Shaych, Joanna, Ella Quince (Carmen Carter), Charmer, Anima,

            and

Pallas come to mind. It's interesting that most of the bards that I

            read

stopped writing in the show's later seasons.

XINE:What drew you to the series in the first place; what best

            describes

            XWP at its best?

OGAMI:Xena Warrior Princess at its best would be the opening 5

            minutes

            of Return of Callisto.

XINE:Have you gone on to write fanfic for any other series

currently?

OGAMI:No, I don't think any other series will inspire me to write my

            own

fiction. And it was the wonderful universe of Xena stories already

            out

there on the internet that inspired me to do that.

XINE:Do you think you'll ever go back and contribute anything

further

            to

the X&G fanfic or did the ugly way TPTB finished off our heroine

kill

            your inspiration as well?

OGAMI:I'm one of those who lost the inspiration to write in the

Xenaverse with the crucifixion of our heroines in the 4th season. As

            for

the series finale, I was one of the few who wasn't shocked by Rob

Tapert's ultimate vision for the series. After all, he did

            write "Who's

Gurkhan", and it had all the themes that many fans found

            objectionable

in the finale. Most just didn't notice at the time.

XINE:Did the xenaverse inspire you to start writing or was that

something you always saw yourself pursuing?

OGAMI:It was the efforts by those 1st and 2nd season fan writers

that

inspired me. That and the wonderful screen chemistry of Renee

            O'Connor

and Lucy Lawless. I never sought to emulate or copy any other bard,

            but

rather I identified the genres of stories I liked to read, and

            limited

            my writing to that.

XINE:Ew, an erotic question...you can just ignore this one if you'd

rather not respond, but how does a guy write such scintillating (and

delicious) sex scenes between women? Is it part and parcel of

            the "male

lesbian" syndrome? Thumbs up to the relatively few, but tasty love

            scenes, ahem.

OGAMI:(chuckle) I set out to write a realistic relationship. While

            sex

is a part of my stories, it's not the only part. I lead the reader

to

focus on what Xena and Gabrielle are saying or thinking during those

scenes. As for my view on how much sex not to put into a story, see

            my

erotic parody, "Fruit Feet & Grins".

XINE:Feel free to rant on TPTB, the FINale, anything else you wish

if

            you'd like.

OGAMI:Oh, I feel that as Rob Tapert was the creator of the series,

he

was perfectly entitled to string Xena's naked corpse up and drive

Gabrielle insane talking to an urn. By that same token, I have the

            right

as a viewer never to watch or pay money for anything he is even

            remotely

associated with again. I vote with my wallet. (And yes, that

includes

            the Spider Man movie.)

XINE:What is the most enjoyable experience you've had as a fan,

            whether

            at a con, or whatever?

OGAMI:Meeting in person people at Conventions who had read my

            stories,

and enjoyed the show in general. Alas I never got to see Renee

            O'Connor

at a convention, that is my dream. Maybe one day she'll return to

the

states for more conventions or film work.

XINE:Did you feel awfully cheeky writing "Subtext?" A real-life uber

            in

which Renee and Gabrielle exchange places due to some funky

            dimensional

warpage or other and the chemistry thing carries over to the

            alternate

Xena reality as well as 'real' life in Auckland and mutual

attraction

            inevitably ensues.

OGAMI:I got the idea after I had tracked down every online interview

            I

had of Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor. I thought that if I could

            take

their reactions in real life and work a story out of it, it might be

interesting. Little did I know that Subtext would become my most

            popular

story, I've received more email on it than any other story. I think

            the

story works because I tried to inject as much humor in the situation

            as

possible. And I can never again listen to Madonna's "Bedtime Story"

without thinking of it. :) -John (Ogami)

A classic. Almost uber. An excellent evocation of and dissertation

            upon

the Obsession. Lively, satiric (though sweetly satisfying), and

well-researched! A kind of crossover from virtual to 'real' life.

            While

working on an episode of XWP the actress playing our beloved bard

becomes the victim of some sort of Twilight Zone anomaly and finds

herself, conveniently in costume, in ancient Greece with a living

            Xena.

She, inevitably, can't help herself from growing closer to the

            warrior

who is pining for her lost lover while the parallel situation is

transpiring in NZ as a bard out of her normal element all but moves

            in

with the lovely actress who plays her partner on teevee. The kiwi

            slang

term "boink" was never employed in more memorable fashion. Five

            "Gabrielle/Xena Trilogy"

Alright, forget everything you know. At least in its proper "known

world" order and chronology. This clever parody is a total

reconfiguration of several seasons worth of story arcs and

            characters. A

very different version of how our heroines met. Gabrielle has run

            away

from home to join the amazons and someone a lot like Xena appears to

            be

in training for the tribe as well, albeit incognito. Some very

            amusing

stuff along with a few genuinely harrowing moments. Try Valasca and

Callisto as...I won't give it away. Could the quotes from Sappho,

            e.g.,

possibly be more perfectly and succinctly chosen? He even

presciently

cited the exact same quote that was later read to such memorable

            effect

by Gabrielle/Renee in "Many Happy Returns." Very playful lovemaking

            and

dialogue. Delightful. As Gab uses her vivid imagination (at Xena's

urging) to develop her own devastating sexual technique. Mind those

alphas and omegas, girls... This is the story Ogami says he is most

proud of and the way, as depicted in earlier seasons, that he

prefers

            to

see our amazon nation before they were turned into mere gyrating,

            even

more scantily clad bimbos. This is the real 'Amazon High.' Five*****

A song by Johnny Cash of all folks lending inspiration to an X&G

Just as the title says. A charming bit of verse followed by a short

scene illustrated by some great screengrabs. Beautifully written and

constructed. The poetry plays like authentic Cavalier school verse

            while

the connected vignettes are by turns romantic, amusing, and moving

            and

the pics, especially those of Gabrielle, are perfectly chosen and

utterly charming. And even Xena feels a song coming on... Five *****

Xena's unforgivable transgression against her partner in "The Bitter

Suite" cries out for--Vengeance! And Ogami delivers. An angry fan

attempts to tie up some of those annoying loose ends as well. This

is

his one deadly serious tale. He refers to it as a "horror story" and

indeed it is, i.e., the first part where he describes in lurid

detail

Gabrielle's injuries as she is receiving them and the whole horrible

incident through her eyes and what is going on in her mind as she is

brutalized by the one in whom she had such faith and trust.

"Take my hand...I'm a stranger in paradise..." Ogami injects himself

into the ancient past. Yes, it's a Mary Sue! You are there as HE is

there as in "You Are There," you see? Coo-coo-katchoo! Hi-larious.

Brilliant. Everything you always wanted to know first-hand about the

alt(ernate) universe. He even makes an amusing off-hand fish out of

water ref to classic Trek spanning the gamut of the evolution of

Mary

A true feminist document, and some of the best feminist documents

Highly amusing little short. Remember the Hestian Virgin with the

            speech

impediment (and Xena's face) who warned our little bard about impure

thoughts and actions and their unfortunate results... You may go

blind--but then, love is. Especially big, dumb, obtuse warriors

whose

many skills finally are explained away along with the fact that we

            never

actually saw Xena have non-flashback sex with anyone but the shade

of

old buddy Marcus. She finally 'takes care' of Gab, but not exactly

in

            the

downunder short subject "Peach," as well as on the more empurpled

            erotic

fanfic itself. The obsessions are a bit different here from the

other

"F, F&G," (and, thankfully, sans Joxer) but with the same basic

result--some eventual chuminess under the stars. And not just

            "Loosed Ends"

            A surprisingly straight-forward, heart-felt, poignant tale (but

don't

let that fool ya) that, just as its title implies, ties up all those

niggling little doubts and loose ends over The Rift and its bloody

outcome (The Drag). Takes place as X&G are still sitting in the surf

            at

the end of "Bitter Suite." And the author provides three alternate

endings. Can't ask for better than that.

Ogami's words at the top of the page re the Xena 'pro' novels by Ru

The title probably would not bring to mind a remake of the

            whole "Who's

Gurkhan?" incident. A far more palatable version in which we do not

            have

to witness our more than capable WP beaten and battered to a bloody

            pulp

in order to achieve the same result. And the denouement (all right--

Truly hilarious parody of the classic hot tub scene with a slightly

Another comedic take, this one on the subject of what actually

            happened

after Gab fell into the Pit of Dahok. Yes, I said comedy. The bard

is

learning how to get what she wants. And if faking her own death and

searching out a possible attraction in that butch female mercenary

            from

Superb. Sums up so many things that went wrong with the series.

Laugh

out loud funny. And Xena deals with Joxer once and for all. (It was

            for

the best.) Takes place during the execrable "Footloose" rip-off, er

parody episode, "Tale of Two Muses." A sorry excuse for an episode

            just

to give Bruce something to do, we suppose, not to mention that

            dreadful

little guttersnipe Tara...and where did the TV Guide synopsis get

off

referring to her as Gab's "friend"!!!!? After she did a Mike Tyson

her ear too! Geez. No respect. Which producer's little girlfriend

was

she? Totally 'tomboy' anyway, who would even think she'd be

            interested

in a BOYfriend?--that was the real fantasy in this episode. The best

Xena Live! Episode 2: Xena Lives! The Musical

            A Short Review

            by Sue Winter

They're baaack! And wonderfully at it again. All the players from

the first episode of Xena Live have reconvened in Chicago for a tour

de force musical send off of our favorite tv show. Stars Elizabeth

Laidlaw (Xena) and Amy Matheny (Gabrielle) and writer Claudia Allen

have returned to delight us with a Xena Live sequel, this time with

a

musical continuation of FIN and a comical (though given the

Xenaverse, also perfectly plausible!) Xena resurrection. There are

well executed fight scenes galore, a sinister Alti, a silly but

loveable Aphrodite, an arrogant and charming Ares and a rousing

original musical score marvelously delivered by the entire cast.

This is a must see for any diehard Xenite and it's also very

enjoyable for those unfamiliar with the show. Oh – but you can

forget about any subtext in this episode though. That's because it's

entirely maintext! The creators of this episode have firmly put to

rest any doubts about the nature of Xena and Gabriele's

relationship. No, they AREN'T just good friends! For a complete

synopsis of the play and some wonderful commentary please read

Brown,"

"The Profiler," "Roseanne," and "Buffy." Anyone know of any others?]

            6) Xena: Warrior Princess Episode Guide

            by Bacchae2

Episode Forty-six "A Comedy of Eros" and Episode Forty-seven "The

            Furies"

            "A Comedy of Eros"

The opening shots of Karl Urban, unrecognizable as Caesar here, as

            the

winged punky God of Love cooing to the mischievous cherub are some

of

            the

few utterly precious and adorable moments in series history. A merry

mix-up in the classic tradition. Xena falls for Draco, Gab for Joxer

(smelling salts please) aka "pookie," Draco for Gab... And it goes

on

and on and around and around and just when you think you're going to

            puke--

Subtext Rating: Puleeze... Yes, we can all quibble (or groan, or

threaten a thousand deaths, or gnash our teeth and tear our hair)

            when

Jerxer comes between our girls quite literally, maddeningly (in an

agonizing slo-mo tease yet), and that babylove arrow of cupidity

            meant

for them alone (not that they needed it). The title IS a parody of

            The

Comedy of ERRORS afterall. But Draco, of all people, sees the truth,

though blinded by the light of love for Gabrielle himself, and cuts

            to

the chase: when Xena asks him if he would risk killing "the woman

you

love," he throws it back in her face--"The question is, would you?"

What? The reference is to the "Woman" you love... He's a smart

enough

cookie to size up his competition...and, as we know, he already

knows

            Xena...

            ============

            "The Furies"

The Madness of Princess Xena. Those flaky fandancing Furies put the

            fix

in with Ares to mess with Xena's mind. Another episode that Lucy

deserved an emmy for. She fearlessly goes way over the top on the

comedic mad scenes, but beautifully underplays the tragic hero

tones.

The expression in her eyes, the devastation written on her face when

            she

listens in utter stillness to her mother's tale of her father's

death

and when she contemplates suicide are goosebump inducing. And I

still

believe she hit the nail on its head when she deduced that Ares was

really her daddy. It would explain so much. And he had already

            portrayed

himself as her father in "Ties That Bind." That's a big honking

clue.

Subtext Rating: The Passion of a Powerful Princess. We have to

wonder

just what the crazed but alluring WP means when she suggestively

            murmurs

in Gabrielle's ear that she "can't be trusted" while tying the bard

            to a

tree (and appearing to ogle her cleavage...not that even a Hestian

Virgin could help herself in that enviable position...) Hmm. And

Gabs

comforting the naked wild woman warrior in Lady Macbeth mode has

lent

feverish details to more than one bit of inspired fanfic. Ares

little

parting snipe re Gabs: "I still don't get what you see in her."

Gab's

eyes narrow and she sets her jaw in an almost arrogant little

            smirk--wouldn't you like to know...

            7) The Missy Zone

            by bacchae2

            Missy Good Current Story Updates

            http://www.merwolf.com/current.html

We just have to take any opportunity to say it again. Brava. Genius.

Applause, applause. When does she find the time?! Two more back to

            back

scripts and a Conqueror story that is turning out, thus far, to be

            her

Masterpiece (or Mistresspiece). "Shadows of the Soul" I would place

            in

the pantheon right up there next to "Legacy" which is, no question,

            one

of the best first scripts anyone ever wrote for episodic tv. It is

flowing from her pen (er, keyboard) like fine sparkling champagne

            from a

crystal fountain. Hyperbole deserved. This is Great Stuff. Either it

            is

writing itself or she is taking great care with this one. And

            enjoying

herself immensely--and it shows. I quite understand and applaud her

decision to write it in tandem with a regular xenaverse tale as an

antidote for her own psyche (and ours), but "Champion" has been very

slow going as a result. Which is understandable. Write while the

            irony

is hot. This is how Dickens groupies must have felt, waiting avidly

            for

every serialized chapter. I find myself re-reading each update of

"Shadows" several times and hanging on every well-chosen word. In

contrast, it has taken me months to struggle through Melissa Scott's

overwritten cyberpunk pro sf novel "Dreaming Metal," in which not a

            damn

thing even begins to happen till the last quarter of a three hundred

page book and which I will nominate as most boring novel ever

written

            by

a lesbian. And she wins Lambda "literary" awards. Go figure. I'll

            take

online uber and alt for mine, thank you very much. The Conqueror

            hasn't

done anything nastier than Missy's own Xena on at least two

occasions

            I

can vividly recall. No one writes ultra-violence more vividly or

less

offensively than Missy. But this Xena and Gabrielle are essentially

            the

same people inside, especially when they interact, though in very

different circumstances. And that chemical combustible inevitable

attraction of soulmates thing just cannot be denied. No matter the

            time

or place or situation. Xena is complex as ever, endlessly

fascinating

and fearsome--and fearless, of course. And Gabrielle. What a

uniquely

intriguing character she remains no matter what dire situation you

            toss

her into, she adapts. It's her heart, and her intelligence. It

            shines.

To see things through her eyes is to suddenly understand Great

            Truths,

sometimes in the most startling, though usually gentle, fashion.

Does

anyone know and write these characters any better? I don't think so.

There is darkness and tragedy, but it's not all grim. Just as in the

regular Missy xenaverse. There is humor too. Sometimes in the

            darnedest

moments. And I absolutely loved that she saw fit to rectify that

dramatically incorrect flaw from the first season, second episode

            when

the one to tend to Xena's arrow wound should've been the blood-

            innocent

bard receiving her baptism of fire. It's a hurt/comfort bonding

            ritual

and here they both get to perform it to perfection upon each other.

I

can't get enough of this story. I hope it's Good and long.

            Picture Perfect

            by Melissa Good

            http://xenamultimedia.com/XWPSubtextS7/S7E13/S7-E13-Teaser.htm

The return of...Ulysses?! What can Missy have been thinking?! But,

            don't

get your kilt in a twist, everything will be fine...this time. That

whole nasty business of thirty odd years before finally gets cleared

            up

once and for all. Gab confronts Xena and her own residual and

            reawakened

jealousy in the old heart-breaking matter. This is really another

comedic farce however, concerning a damaged nude painting for which

            Xena

is persuaded to pose for a replacement. The artist--Lucia, of

course.

            Is

Missy saying that she IS a character?

            Five*****stars!

            Roman Holiday

            by Melissa Good

            http://xenamultimedia.com/XWPSubtextS7/S7E14/S7-E14-Teaser.htm

This time it's Beowulf's turn to pop in for a visit. (Ironic bit of

synchronicity since he is also in the Roman arena episode at the

            other

virtual site.) Not much more than a brief cameo though as we

            concentrate

on X&G's attempts to break into the gladiator games to rescue him.

            He's

been taken for fodder for fun Roman style. Xena, just as Gab

            threatened

her in "Legacy," is coerced into playing the slave this time to the

bard's patrician noble. Some hurt/comfort a la "When Fates Collide"

            or

"Who's Gurkhan" with a battered, yet again, WP. A would-be woman

            eating

lion will lose his dignity before this one comes to an end. The

tease

            of

a beginning is one of the tastiest parts, however. Four****stars

            8) Feedback

(This lovely email from Ogami inspired us to ask him for an

            interview.)

            "Death of a God"

            Dear Lady Adrell,

I too was stunned and saddened at the death of Kevin Smith. Perhaps

            he

was indeed due for his big hollywood break as the articles suggest,

I

            guess we'll never know.

I had the pleasure of seeing him and Danielle Cormack at a creation

            con,

and boy you would have thought they had flown from New Zealand just

            to

meet us. And they did! It was wonderful meeting them, and such a

surprise at how eloquent Kevin Smith was. He was using words in

            regular

conversation that most professors won't use. And that accent! It's

            funny

how New Zealand actors are trained to deliver an "American Midwest"

accent. From their performances, we never would have guessed.

            Although

I've never seen his stage work, I truly believe Xena and Hercules

            would

have been poorer without his characters (don't forget he also played

            the

brother of Hercules and Elvis Ares). While his role was reduced to

slapstick in later seasons of the shows, I am glad this is the role

            he

            will be forever known for.

Rest in peace, Kevin. You made your mark on the world. And isn't

that

what Ares the character always wanted?
